Setting up for success in 2018: Follow these handy tips and you won’t go wrong

Too often, people create dreams and wish them to become reality.

There’s no surprise this theory doesn’t work. Highly successful people set goals and work towards their achievement. They are committed not just to their business goals but to many aspects of their lives. They have vision, mission, standards, beliefs and goals that all focus on a deep purpose that drives them on the rollercoaster that is life.

Successful people can articulate why they commit the way they do and they are determined as a result, even when life throws its hurdles as it will. They set goals and commit to their achievement.

Every person has a core need to grow and make progress. The words ‘commitment’ and ‘purpose’ are key aspects of progress and success. One of the behaviours that results in people not achieving their desires is a lack of commitment linked to a ‘big why?’

The big why is the purpose and meaning behind why committing to a particular thing/behaviour/attitude is important. A mentor once told me "A big enough why will take care of any how."

What he was describing, was that too often dreams and aspirations are swept under the carpet as we don’t have all the answers of how to make it a reality. This is often what holds people back from even starting on making a dream become a reality as they don’t have all the answers.

But guess what, neither did most successful people we look up too. What they did have, was self-belief and a deep sense of purpose to their goals. They committed to goals to achieve their purpose. Self-belief is backing yourself that you can do it. It is created by committing to something, one thing, even a small thing, and seeing it through to completion.

There have been many books written over time that emphasise the importance of committing to the one thing that no matter what, you will never compromise on. That, by committing to this one thing, you will be able to achieve your goals and aspirations in all aspects of your life. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

You may question the validity of such a statement. Is it the actual ‘thing’ or is it the actual commitment that is made to that thing?

It is argued that how you do one thing is how you do everything. Regardless if you agree with this statement or not, it is interesting to consider how you approach what you would classify as semi-important tasks.

What is your commitment level? How much do you persevere? How do you respond when a problem arises? When you are able to dedicate yourself to something you would deem relatively unimportant and achieve it, you build self-trust and inner confidence that you can achieve what you set out to do.

It is the commitment to the achievement of small tasks that set up success of large important tasks. An example of a relatively small task is planning and then completing exercise on a regular basis. How you approach the achievement of a task you have committed to will indicate how you will approach the larger tasks that come next.

Commitment and purpose are key in success for you in 2018. Plan for success with goal setting linked to your purpose and commit to their achievements and watch your success be achieved. Know your mission and purpose and what beliefs and attitudes you need to have to make them a reality.
